US Law Enforcement Disclose Arrests in Disrupted New Year's Eve Terror Plot Near Southern California
Law enforcement officials stated on Monday that they had successfully thwarted a comprehensive plan to detonate explosive devices at numerous sites operated by two American businesses on New Year's Eve in Southern California. This action resulted from the detainment of people linked to an militant group promoting anti-corporate and anti-authority ideologies.
Individuals Detained During Isolated Dry Run
Four individuals were arrested last Friday in the Mojave Desert found east of Los Angeles as they were reportedly running through their planned operation. Federal attorneys showed overhead surveillance video to the media, which depicted the individuals transporting a big obscure device to a workspace. Law enforcement stressed that the detainments were made ahead of the suspects could put together a operational IED.
Identities of the Those Charged Disclosed
Based on the public legal filing, the four people named are Audrey Illeene Carroll, 30; Zachary Aaron Page, 32; Dante Gaffield, 24; and Tina Lai, who is 41. Each of them are understood to be from the Los Angeles region.
Suspected Motivation and Group Affiliations
Although prosecutors did not explicitly detail a reason, they stated the suspects are adherents of a faction called the Turtle Island Liberation Front. This entity according to documents calls for "the working class to rise up and combat against corporate power," as per the criminal complaint.
They face involve conspiracy to commit a crime and possession of a explosive. The government indicated that more counts are expected in the coming weeks.
Elements of the Reported "Midnight Sun Operation"
Officials stated that one of the suspects had devised a step-by-step plan last month to attack at least five corporate facilities across Southern California on New Year's Eve. The locations were likened to "similar to Amazon" logistical centers.
"The bomb plot was specific," an official remarked. "It contained step-by-step instructions to build IEDs … and named several targets across Orange County and Los Angeles."
According to the investigation and legal filings, the plot called for planting rucksacks packed with intricate pipe bombs that were set to be exploded all at once at midnight on New Year's Eve at 5 locations. New Year's Eve was chosen as an ideal time since the scheme stated "celebratory explosions will be going off at this time so detonations will be less likely to be noticed."
The handwritten, eight-page handwritten plan, named "OPERATION MIDNIGHT SUN," stated that more sites could be added. The locations were identified as assets and operations operated by two distinct firms involved in business affecting interstate and foreign commerce.
Future Schemes and Materials Seized
Court documents also stated that two members in the faction had planned later strikes focusing on ICE agents officers and cars with pipe bombs in 2026. One suspect reportedly noted that such strikes "would eliminate some and intimidate the rest of them."
Such discussions were allegedly planned both at an physical assembly in Los Angeles and through an private digital platform.
Images featured in the case file show a desert campsite with what officials described as IED-construction items laid out on makeshift work surfaces.
Official documents notes that the group "all brought IED parts to the location, such as assorted sizes of PVC pipes, believed to be a chemical compound, fuel, charcoal powder, powdered sulfur, and items to be used as fuses, among others."
The scheme also had directions on how to build the explosives and how to not leave behind forensic clues that could be traced back to the group. The individuals had not long ago purchased precursor chemicals and other items, including buys from e-commerce sites.
Operation and Follow-up
The FBI intervened last week when the suspects were running through the attack in the isolated region near a desert community. "They owned every item they required to make an operational explosive device at that site," an official stated.
As part of executed search warrants, authorities allegedly discovered posters for the Turtle Island Liberation Front at one accused's dwelling that advocated "Death to America", and "Death to ICE". At another suspect's residence, police discovered a duplicate of the detailed explosives scheme.
The individuals were detained without a struggle. They were scheduled to make a court appearance in Los Angeles on Monday afternoon.
