Thomas Tuchel Desires Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Ace Leaves His Ego at the Door.

A single omission was enough. Another and it could have seemed vindictive from the England manager, a coach who is much too clever not to realize that winning the World Cup is probably going to require the involvement of the talented midfielder, even if it is also Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies necessary with the national team now that he is returned to the manager's supportive environment.

The manager seeks the player's competitive fire, his fire, but it is a matter of using it constructively. Individual quality matters but the squad understand from past setbacks that there is a cost when celebrity prevails. Nevertheless, a statement has been delivered.

The midfielder was given food for thought after his omission of the recent team selection. He watched England qualify at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched the young talent excel as a counterpressing No 10. He heard the coach talk about loving the group’s energy and principles. Naturally, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, netting important strikes for Real Madrid against their rivals and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have left his World Cup hopes precarious.

The expectation is that the manager will have a midfielder concentrating on intimidating opponents instead of teammates. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is no value to picking a fight with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that his period on the sidelines has made him realize that an international career is a valuable, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.

“No issue exists with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel stated. “Jude displays the edge. You need a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he reached. We all need to support him and establish an environment which he can [have] that intensity in matches and in pursuit of success we are working towards as a team.”

The star took up most of the attention at the manager's selection reveal for this month’s meaningless matches versus one opponent and the other. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker in need of love and guidance. Foden has been absent for England since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but Tuchel was impressed by the player after his display in the Champions League match versus the German side recently.

The question, however, is how to use the multiple playmakers at England’s disposal. Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to include Cole Palmer once he is fit after a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager failed to discover the right blend at the European Championship. He compromised by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping the captain's influence in the process.

It seems unlikely Tuchel making the same mistake if it hurts the team harmony. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. He is selected as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a No 8 and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who must play through the middle. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘We want you in the team but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play the left side? Can you play other flank?’” he said. “He will play in the central attacking zone, in the middle of the pitch. I've long had this fantasy regarding him for years. In my view it fits his style the most.”

He conceded there are times when Foden has appeared uncomfortable in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then obviously something is not right, whether it's the position, the setup, it's unclear.

“In my opinion he is also accustomed to playing for his club in a particular setup, with a clear task. Believe he benefits a lot from clarity. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? Where am I supposed to accelerate the match? What are my to defensive duties?”

Tuchel mentioned Bellingham bursting through for tap-ins and the other drilling in strikes from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of many candidates. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest abounds.

The omission of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a false 9 versus Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are other options should he be unavailable. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for testing tactics.

Meanwhile, it is additionally a moment to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in a friendly win against the Scots in September 2023 to find the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. The coach will know that the two stars only exchanged the ball once during England’s draws with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. The connection is lacking.

“This is where eventually it becomes the duty of the individuals,” he stated. He is not afraid to deliver home truths. Remains a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He may not be assured to start versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him onside but he will be watching him closely. Set aside self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an more effective one.
