The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for Real Madrid, featuring five appearances in the starting lineup.

Whenever a 18-year-old creates club history in a pivotal Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the 15-time Champions League winners secured a three-nil round of 16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a cameo off the bench at Benfica, then helped Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating Brazil forward Vini Jr's record by 10 days.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's academies, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.

Pitarch worked his way up to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they played against the academy's first team, then managed by the former defender, where the teenager is said to have caught the attention of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in the new year.

Spanish media would later label the moment as "an instant connection," adding he stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.

'His Best Attribute Remains His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that became the turning point in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Manchester City.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the first day I began playing the game, each day you go to train and every day you have a game," stated the player following his first appearance.

"I've just fulfilled my ambition with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in La Liga against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has retained his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Ceballos provided an opening.

The teenager has taken it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," said the coach. "He's incredibly energetic, with excellent endurance, work-rate and mobility."

Pitarch's mentality has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to watch him make his debut in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had total trust in him to do his normal game.

"He will keep receiving opportunities with the main squad. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and was raised fully immersed in Spanish football, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's renowned La Fabrica system.

He holds both Moroccan and Spanish citizenship, offering him the option to represent both nations at senior international level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only binding once they play in a competitive senior international match.

He has featured for Spain at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has yet to commit to either senior national team, who are monitoring his progress with keen attention.

Speaking recently, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. Things are positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario echoes that of other dual nationality talents such as club colleague Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Brahim decided to play for the Atlas Lions.

Eyes on the Prize

At present, Pitarch's focus is on making his mark in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He played over an hour in the two-one victory at the Etihad, which sealed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.

His substitution by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in younger players to aid the team chase future success.

After his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is tipped to be a central figure in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said following the success at Etihad Stadium.
