The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Play-Off Showdown Versus Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed exceptional composure to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a tense play-off following a topsy-turvy last day of play.

The Englishman sank a decisive birdie putt from around eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

The champion entered the final round with a single stroke lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdies and two bogeys.

The challenger edged one shot ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the final hole.

Play-Off Climax

That set up a playoff at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” said the winner, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it is. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Other Performances

Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to make up, finishing a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s best-ever score on the European Tour, comprising eight birdie putts and one eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. English golfer Mansell hit an excellent final-round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
