Jailhouse Surprise: Brazil's FormerPresident Jair Bolsonaro Faces Life in Prison

He contested the law and the legal system won.

Two months following receiving a twenty-seven-year sentence for attempting to “destroy” Brazil’s democracy, former president Jair Bolsonaro at last seems destined for incarceration.

Anticipated Imprisonment

The adjudicated instigator – who has been living under house arrest in his estate while a series of court processes and challenges unfold – is largely predicted to be incarcerated in the next few days, during increasing talk that he will be sent to a notorious maximum security penitentiary.

Past Statements on Convicts

During Bolsonaro’s four-decade public life, the conservative former soldier displayed little mercy for Brazil’s jailed individuals.

“For what reason must we provide these lowlifes a comfortable existence?” he once mused. “They should just get messed, end of story. That's my view.”

At another time, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to wind up in prison, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Jail Location Debate

However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled allies, a group of four this week inspected the facility in an obvious attempt to dissuade the supreme court from sending him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, claimed he expected the septuagenarian figure to be imprisoned in the coming fortnight and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s serious gut issues – the result of a life-threatening knife attack during the 2018 presidential campaign – meant it would be hazardous to keep the former president there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to manage if they take him to Papuda … It would be awful,” he commented, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the condition of prison meals.

When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted observing cells accommodating four dozen inmates: “It's practically one meter squared per inmate.

“We spoke to the convicts and they grumble, unsurprisingly, of the terrible food,” continued the senator.

Supporters Voice Concerns

Lucas is not the lone figure speaking out ahead of the one-time head of state's predicted incarceration.

Penning in a major publication, another ally, the ex- government official Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “brutal” end to Bolsonaro’s “impeccable” public service and asserted Brazil was about to see “the greatest unfairness in its record”.

“It is an injustice that eats away the hearts of millions of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Divided Popular Response

It is possibly true given the considerable support Bolsonaro holds on the right-wing. However his expected imprisonment has also pleased the spirits of numerous other people who think he deserves to be imprisoned for conspiring to block the elected leader from assuming office – and even plotting to have him killed.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the sitting president's allied group, said: “Not a soul wishes Bolsonaro to be sent in a dungeon. Nobody desires Bolsonaro to be put in solitary confinement. Nobody wishes Bolsonaro to lack food or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We wish him to receive respectful handling – but dignified handling in prison. He must not continue being his personal jailer for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro backers, who have spent years applauding the harsh treatment of convicts, had unexpectedly become aware to their privileges. “Only now has the conservative fringe – which has consistently claimed that civil liberties are not for criminals – opted to visit a jail to find out what conditions are truly like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a criminal,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he merited “degrading, degrading handling”.

Likely Prison Environment

In spite of talk that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which presently holds about 14,000 prisoners, his probable location seems to be a adjacent penitentiary for police officers and other “particular” detainees referred to as Papudinha (Little Papuda).

Its cells are considerably more pleasant than those in the main prison, although still a distant from the luxury Bolsonaro had while occupying the impressive leader's home, about 12 miles away.

According to information, the cell Bolsonaro could expect to reside in in Papudinha measures about 24 square meters – approximately the dimensions of a couple of car spots – and contains a 12 sq metre bathroom with a shower and a 130 square foot veranda. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a set and additionally a minibar in his cell as long as they were provided by his relatives,” the report indicated.

Ideological Comments

Senator Lucas condemned the rumoured idea to send the former leader to Papuda as “a type of payback” on the part of the supreme court judge who led Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his fate in the {
