Gas Detonation Takes 3 Law Enforcement Officers Amid Property Removal Procedure in the Verona Area
A trio of officers were killed and no fewer than 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently intentional blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.
Event Timeline
The detonation was triggered as officers and emergency crews approached the residence close to the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for three siblings aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Carabinieri military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who escaped following the explosion was apprehended shortly later. The trio have been taken to medical facility.
The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and photographs from the area revealed the structure left as a pile of rubble.
“This is a time for grieving,” said the Minister of the Interior Minister Piantedosi, who noted that previous tries had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The president of the region of Veneto, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an removal notice due to debts accrued by the siblings.
Mediators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the officers arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents caused the explosion.
“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander the police commander informed the media.
A propane tank had been set off, and the blast directly hit our officers,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also discovered at the residence, the interior minister said.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the local prosecutor, the property was in a poor condition and had no electricity.
The prosecutor believed the blast had happened on a story above the access point and informed journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the blast, he said officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being opened”.
Community Reaction
“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants told Italian media, adding that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister Guido Crosetto stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
