A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, achieving a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's opening auction of the new year.

The top offer for the 243kg fish was placed by the parent firm of a popular sushi restaurant group, which operates outlets throughout Japan and overseas.

"The first tuna brings good luck," commented the business owner, a notable participant at the annual January sale.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this entrepreneur is noted for placing high bids for premium bluefin tuna at these high-profile new year auctions.

Auction Surprise and Historic Past

Following the auction, the successful bidder informed journalists that he was "astonished at the final price," adding, "I believed we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price escalated in no time."

This new acquisition tops his previous notable purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he purchased a tuna for 333.6 million yen ($2.1m).

Even after previously saying that he thought he "did too much," he has now managed to break his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of High Prices

The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is typically associated with sky-high prices. In the prior year, the initial tuna was acquired for 207 million yen by another food company, which announced the fish would be served at its eateries across Japan.

The frenetic energy at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which started around 05:00 local time, was no different.

Immediate Consumption

The multi-million-dollar tuna was quickly processed for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi establishments shortly after the auction concluded.

"I feel like I've commenced the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so lucky as the year gets underway," remarked one happy patron.
